QUAN Sea Vista Retreat opens in Onna Village, Okinawa, Japan. Barrel sauna and Japanese-style inn born of the owner's dream and passion
Notice of Opening
A new healing space, QUAN Sea Vista Retreat, has opened in Onna Village, Okinawa Prefecture, and will begin taking reservations in July 2024, offering a luxury package that includes a barrel sauna handcrafted by the owners and an authentic Japanese-style inn. In this issue, we will introduce how this project came to fruition.
Owner Suganuma's beginnings as a carpenter
Masanori Suganuma, owner of QUAN Sea Vista Retreat, honed his career as a woodworking engineer by creating facilities in Japan and established his business in Okinawa in 2007. With his excellent skills and beautiful designs, he has been involved in the construction and interior design of various facilities and businesses in Okinawa Prefecture. The works created by Mr. Suganuma's hands have received tremendous support from many of his clients.
Encounter with Sauna
While Mr. Suganuma worked in all parts of Japan, he was also a great lover of saunas. To relieve his daily fatigue, he visited various sauna facilities in Japan and was impressed by their comfort and relaxation effects. He began to build saunas, mobilizing all the skills he had acquired as a carpenter.
Commitment to Barrel Saunas
Mr. Suganuma decided to make the most of the sauna's features, the characteristics of wood, and his own woodworking skills to create an ideal barrel sauna. Taking advantage of the fragrance and durability of Japanese cypress, he aimed to create a sauna that could heal many people. After much trial and error, the completed barrel sauna is a gem of a sauna, with beautiful wood grain, pleasant aroma, and perfect insulation performance.
More than just saunas, Japanese-style inn design
Not satisfied with the completion of the sauna, Mr. Suganuma went one step further. To maximize relaxation after the sauna, he thought it was important to provide accommodations as well. He designed and built his own Japanese-style inn, incorporating the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture, with comfortable bedding, a spacious layout, and a tranquil environment. Particular attention was paid to harmony with nature. Designed to incorporate the beauty of the surrounding nature, the inn provides visitors with a truly relaxing stay.
Birth of QUAN Sea Vista Retreat
The name "Quan" means "Quiet" and "Harmony," a fusion of the Japanese word "Harmony" and the Japanese word "Quiet" meaning "rest and relaxation. Mr. Suganuma aims to make this facility a place of healing for all who visit.
Owner's thoughts
I wanted more people to know about the comfort of the sauna that I experienced. I wanted to create a place where people could enjoy the beauty of Japanese architecture at the same time," said Suganuma. The combination of a sauna and an inn for sauna is a great match. By refreshing your body and mind in the sauna and then relaxing in a Japanese-style inn, I believe you will experience the ultimate in healing and luxury."
Appointed as a director of Okinawa Sauna and Spa Association
Wellness is currently the focus of much attention in Okinawa Prefecture. The importance of self-conditioning is recognized through exercise, diet, yoga, and other activities. Sauna is another important experience that goes hand in hand with wellness. Sauna events will be held in the prefecture starting in 2023, and Mr. Suganuma is providing an opportunity for Okinawan residents to gain wellness through sauna.
